Expand Your Career Through Graduate School Online
You've made it through high school and even your undergraduate lives.
You've taken your last midterms, finals, and comprehensive exams.
You've settled into a career and probably a pattern of life. Yet, there's a question tickling the back of your mind.
What's next? You may be shocked to find the answer is complexly simple - graduate school! Most of us have found ourselves asking at some point, is this what it was all for? While for some it may be, those that consider graduate school open the door to more options than ever before. This is especially true for those who want to secure the higher paying jobs that require more education and specialized knowledge than they have at present. There are some things to consider before making the decision to enroll back into university life.
A couple of those considerations are the differences between undergraduate and graduate school and choosing a traditional or graduate school online.
As an undergraduate, you were prepped with general study courses. The goal is to ensure that you are a member of a collective body of information and have enough specialized knowledge to qualify for entry-level positions in your field.
Graduate school is different; there are no general study courses, as the goal is to create specialists. The focus is narrower and much deeper allowing for mastery of a subject. Those who survive graduate programs have gained specialized training and qualify for leading positions in their fields. Now the question is: traditional or online? For many of us, going back to school is not a feasible option because it's such an overwhelming thought.
Research shows that if a task seems too complex or difficult, it's human nature to delay fruition.
One tool for keeping the dream of a graduate degree alive, is the option of doing it all online.
Once you've made the decision to consider online graduate programs there are other things you should know. For example, how do graduate programs work and how to pick the best one for you.
In a traditional classroom, everyone is getting the same material at the same time, and completing class work in the same environment.
Because students are interacting with each other and the professor at the same time, each are getting relatively the same information and processing it in similar ways.
In a graduate program online, a professor might give a lecture live, using a webcam, or record and post a lecture for students to log into at their leisure. Students may be asked to post to conversation boards, complete group assignments from a distance and submit essays with little to no personal guidance. Communication with your instructors is generally another well-touted difference.
In online programs communication with instructors is generally done through a variety of distance formats: email, chat rooms, bulletin boards, and instant messengers.
Another difference is the required resource list for distance learning: a computer, printer, basic computer skills, self-discipline, and a reliable Internet connection, where as on a traditional campus, these resources would be available on site. A definite perk of online learning is that most online universities offer demonstrations to be used to preview the process.
This is help the potential student determine whether distance learning is for her or not. After understanding how graduate school online works, the next thing to consider is how to choose the best one for you.
Once you've broadened your options to include online graduate programs, proximity is not taken out of the picture completely.
Look out for a residency requirement in which students must meet with faculty in person ever so often. A few other things to look for are: the level of interaction to be expected from the professor, the software used, comprehensive exams and dissertations, who are the faculty, and do their specialties interest you? Most importantly you want to ask questions about the institution: is it accredited and by what organization, what programs are offered and what is it's reputation? Remember graduate school is a big deal and shouldn't be taken lightly.
If you don't have time to sit in a traditional classroom, don't let that deter you from making yourself marketable for higher paying and more esteemed positions in your field.
Do the research, ask the right questions, become an expert and don't be afraid to do it online.
